It's rather easy. It's just a chat program, where you go into certain channels to chat with people who share your interests in, say, gaming, like the #first-strike channel (the # indicates it's the name of a channel). Usually clans/guilds have IRC channels, and most games have it too.
First Strike's IRC channel is located on the quakenet server, which is basically the server where most gamers hang out...

Nah, IRC is a piece of schit, really.  I made it convenient for myself, however, when I found out that I could just add IRC channels as contacts in my instant messaging program. cool
