I'm guessing it's possible to make sparks fly out when a stormtrooper is hit by a blaster, but I doubt the burn effect is possible.

The only problem with this idea is if the code only allows one animation like that for ever soldier of every army. It would look pretty dumb to see sparks fly out from a rebel soldier who is wearing cloth and not armor like the Imperials.

Sparks are done with material effects. Every single polygon/projectile/section of terrain in the game is assigned a material. when one material collides with another the game checks to see what happens when those two materials touch (sort of like a two part epoxy) the collision can cause; an effect to play, damage to be multiplied, the attack material to penertrate the defense material.

So sparks being an effect linked to the collision with a blaster projectile material and ST armour material it is totally possible.
