Topic: Damaging vehicle parts - possible in BF2142?

OK, so in the Project Reality mod for BF2, you can do things like shooting the tracks off a tank. Could something like that be implemented for First Strike? Examples could be shooting engines off of fighters, shooting tracks off of rebel tanks, disabling the repulsorlifts of Imperial tanks (so that they stop hovering and slam into the ground), shooting off weapons, and so on. I'd actually love it if you could 'kill' the astromech droids in Galactic Conquest, and this'd be even better. Imagine shooting at an X-Wing over a rocky planet and watching its own engine and s-foil fly off, causing it to spin and crash itself into the rocky ground.

How much of this is possible, and how much vehicle parts destruction can be implemented before it turns into a lag fest?

No one knows until you actually try it full scale. Which isnt all that easy.

In regards to its possibility, yes its possible. I remember someone early on made the wheels on the FAV shootable so it couldnt drive well anymore. And of course we got the Titan turrets. So destroyable child objects is definetly possible.

For its practical implementation however, we're talking about something really low on the todo list (not saying that it will ever happen since I dont make such decisions nor do I code it lol, just saying that you need to make a vehicle before even thinking about blowing up parts of it).

Destroyable 'child' objects were a new feature added in 2142 they ARE NOT possible in BF2, I haven't seen PRs attempt but from what I have heard it is simply a damage state of the tank.

  We plan to use the Destructive child objects extensively in capital ships, however don't expect to see them in relase 1 as this will take a long time to implement.

Blowing bits off capital ships will be much fun.I hope,in time destructable parts can be implemented into other vehicles too as this would add a whole new dimension to ground battles/tactics.Be happy to wait though as im sure the devs have enough headaches already without having worry about bits falling off tanks.

I would love to implement this in our smaller vehicles as it could add a lot of atmosphere to the game but i dont think it's particularly high priority unfortunately. As you guys say we want to sort out more pressing issues before we add more problems to the mod:P

Adding them to vehicles like fighters and jeeps would cause a lot of lag. I would be happy with just capital ships sporting destructible parts. And some of the bigger vehicles like the ATAT. But not the ATST if you see what I'm saying.

Yeah, would be kind of pointless on things like  a speeder bike.
