Leia fought as a soldier, kinda.  All she did was fire a couple of blasters in 4 and 5, and I huess in 6 as well.  Yes, she was discovered to be a Jedi, but not until the very end of 6, and she never carried a lightsaber.

I read an EU book where Luke gave her a lightsaber once.  The author was either retarded or on crack because he gave her a RED one.  I put down the book when I read that.
