Re: Colour based squad names!

Custom named squads ftw. If you ever see squad called *SPADE* while playing BF2 or BF2142 it's quite certainly my squad. wink Though I like idea of those SW based squad names rather than alpha, bravo etc. vanilla squads.

Re: Colour based squad names!

Well, Imperials would be Black Squad, Onyx Squad, Obsidian Squad, Murky Squad, etc... The squad leaders would probably be designated Black 1, Onyx 1, etc., and then other squad members would be Black 2, Black 3, Onyx 2, Onyx 3, Old Wally, and Shaved Ham.

Since individual designations would be a kind of annoying mid-management-style addition -- besides the fact that as players fight, they move up and down in the squad list, that's probably not necessary.

That said, I know while playing 2142 I don't always have the time to go to the squad menu to see the leader's name -- let alone figure out how half of 'em prefer it should be pronounced.  Just hitting the talk key and saying "Red Leader, Lambda on your tail," would be quicker.  If you really want to get all 'Star-Warsy', I suppose you could call out, 'Onyx Markus, Onyx Teuvo, Onyx Bantha Fodder,' etc...

Today's spelling/grammar tip: There = a (sometimes conceptual) place. "There is my car." or "There is such a thing as magic."  // Their = posessive. "Their meat is full of worms." // They're = contraction of <they are>. "They're crazy!" // "They're trying to put their shoes up there."

Re: Colour based squad names!

man it would be cool to hear something like that in a big space battle..

/me dreams about 64 player space battles...

everyone srambling to find a fighter and jumping in.. then everyone flys with their squad in formations. after a whie they engage the enemy and the area just breaks our with lasers, bright lights, and exploding starfighters everywhere. and then the capitals ships move in and start shooting their turbolasers everywhere. i can just see it now.. flying alongside an enemy capital ship and then a gunner shoots down your squad mate convering you..

ahh, there are many great times to be had in this mod..

As I recall, the TIE/ln (basic model in ep.IV) had Black 1, Black 2, etc. -- those were the designations of Vader's wingmen in the DS trench run. The TIEs modified to work in atmosphere (can't remember their model type) which chased the Falcon on Bespin were Obsidian 1, Obsidian 2, etc. I think there was some thing about the <cough> TIE Defender </cough> where they were Onyx 1, Onyx 2, etc. So, for colors, I guess  they just use different words for 'black' - get out your thesaurii!

I can't remember where, but the TIE Interceptor had an 'Avenger' squadron (Avenger 1, etc.). It may have been just a squadron sent out from the ISD Avenger.  In the SW:CCG, there were also Saber, Scimitar, and Scythe squadrons. Types of knives seem to be a theme.

I suppose you could give the Rebels 'colourful' squad(ron) names, and Imperials things like blacks and greys, maybe. Unless there's some EU 'Gray Squadron' that I haven't heard about (probably Rebel/Republic or Imperial Intelligence group?). Supplement those with things like Avenger, Cutter, Crusher, and other destructive/violent themes, and you've got lots of names available.

The Imperials actually used Alpha (TIE fighter), Gamma (TIE/I), Beta (TIE/bomber) etc. Avenger squadron is a squadron for TIE Avengers (doh.)
