Re: Y wing balance issues

in reply to your counter points:

1) The Tie can outmaneuver Y wing (at least I can, its a little tough, but not impossible). However, the Bombers have shields and a rear gunner, so maneuverability isnt as important.  As in air combat in any realm, you really shouldnt attack a bomber alone, but if a do make sure you "stick & move", do not give the gunner an easy target.

2) not if the Tie pilots are better,co-ordinated blaster passes, will confuse even the best gunners.

3) so do I

Cheers!

Re: Y wing balance issues

3. the ion cannon is on the alternate fire for the gunner
2. it has a blind spot, its belly
1. Tie strenght is basicly in numbers and there made for space battle, y wings are made to be stronger because they need to handle planet conditions.

but i do agree with you, a little. Y wing's are easy picking if there flying solo.
so then the y wing is to weak.
get a gunner and its strong, also a much nicer kill once you get it in a tie

That's all very well but i have two points to counter this.

1. Tie fighters really should be superior to bombers. Since when have bombers been better at dogfights than the fighters themselves?

History says differ. Bombers have had a record of performing exceptionally well in a dog fight against actual fighters.

Re: Y wing balance issues

Actually the y-Wing is OP even w/o a gunner. I jump into a Y-Wing, i switch to gunner position to have it ready pointing at the back and then I jump to the pilot position to go.

As soon as a Tie is on my tail I switch to gunner's position and I rape the Tie that has been tailing me. I've managed to kill 3 Ties in succession just like that, which is much better than my almost zero kills with the X-Wing wink

Re: Y wing balance issues

1. Teamwork goes both ways, so that's not exactly a counter unless your requiring one side to have more teamwork then the other.

2. The ties seem to be more maneuverable, at least if they were going the same speed. As far as I've seen so far, while speed may vary from craft to craft, it seems that all have the same turning arc. Interceptors and A-Wings should have a much tighter turn radius, followed closely by the Tie Fighter. X-wing should be next up, then B-Wing and Tie Bomber. The Y-Wings should probably have the largest turn radius of them all.

Re: Y wing balance issues

I don't know where you got your history from Patriot. I have a degree in history from Oxford, specialising in aeronautical history. Take ww2 for example. During the battle of britain, the Germans frequently sent over He111 and Ju88's. Once the Bf109 fighter escorts were taken care of, the bombers were dead meat. To be honest their machine guns were virtually useless. I have yet to see a bomber that fights well, excluding some modern fighter/bomber aircraft but they have fighter aspects too.

(btw this is a star wars forum. sorry guys. don't know how this thread has come to this)

2. Even two fighters are easy pickings if you have an average joe on the guns.

3. I miss the y wings ion cannon.

1. Therein lies your problem... the Y-wing actually is NOT a bomber. wink It's actually a multi-role fighter, hence it's combat designation of "Attack Fighter", with the bomber role being just one of it's combat roles (you can thank Larry Holland and his X-wing/T.I.E. Fighter sims for starting this whole discrepancy).

T.I.E. Fighters are much faster and more maneuverable, but they're also pretty fragile (with even a glancing blow capable of destroying or incapacitating a T.I.E. Fighter) and were designed to overwhelm and destroy targets en masse.

2. 2 T.I.E. Fighters against 1 Y-wing (especially the S3 model) would be hard pressed to destroy it out without co-ordinated attacks. That being said, the ability for the gunner to switch between laser cannons & ion cannons does give it more of an advantage (as well as not being lore accurate).

3. The Y-wing's ion cannon actually is impemented. However, because it's the two seater S3 model, the ion cannon is operated by the gunner (who has to manually switch over, the default weapon switch key is "F"). wink
