Re: Officer with probe droid

Maybe that's the tradeoff......

He relies on others to do the grunt work so he can do the job of setting up stratigic spawns, gather information about enemy locations, and if one of his soldiers is injured/out of ammo, he can help with that too.

Officer might not be about kills, but, like commanding in vanilla, about the final team win/lose.

most of you guys are completely missing the point of the officer class.

since i had a big hand in developing the officer class and his kit load out, i can tell you haven't quite grasped it yet.

Yes there are new ideas and features I want to give teh officer class that will have to wait for R2 or R3, but the officer class atm, was designed from teh point of view of the Ultimate teamplayer.

Well with this in mind I don’t think I’m missing the point or even totally missing the philosophy behind it. I don’t agree with the concept on how to do it.

FSDev| The_Preacher wrote:

some of his kit items may seem strange if you go y realistic standards (realism is not an issue in a fntasy world) and that is also totaly ignoring gameplay.

I don’t really agree with that, because there is a difference between fantasy and the absurd. I may be wrong, but isn’t the main challenge of any fantasy to appear believable. If you can’t believe in a concept by its own design the lack of illusion kills it. Any game based on infantry combat has a lot to learn from the real world fantasy based or not.

FSDev| The_Preacher wrote:

the goal Set for the officer class was a Person on teh battlefield that had responsibilities.

Issuing the team orders, supplying information and general team management should be the primary objective of the class. Individual survivability shouldn’t be far behind.

Setting up fortifications, supplying ammo, and first aid all take away from the main role precisely why officers in the real world don’t do it. They tell people what to do or maybe even how to do it, but they very seldom ever actually do it. Maybe it should be taken in the direction of demi-commnader and less of a jack of all trades master of none.

Thats the Gameplay behind the officer class and the thoughts behind it.

and when he is played with the above in mind (play with a Dev/Tester who has been playing as squad lead for some time now and you'll see how effective he is) he can greatly Effect the Course of battles.

Well I’m sure even the most lopsided class can be made useful if you can scrounge up and coordinate people to play a team game against an uncoordinated group of random people. Real coordination greatly affects the outcome of any game like this.

By making any class team oriented in a lopsided way it becomes less likely that the normal Joe just wanting to play the game is going to use it. Maybe put more thought into nudging players into team play and rounding out classes in a way that isn’t going to alienate players from using them, because they were designed for the ultimate team player.

Ultimately it’s not my mod it’s just my 2 cents, so do it how you best feel. This is an early version like you said and I’m sure there will be a lot more changes.

There is a difference between being important and being a pompous little brat.

Ok, I kinda agree with you about the officer class "stepping on the toes" of medics and support (though I'm never angry when an officer comes up to me with a bacta tank, unless they're the other team mad ), but what would you replace it with?

Ok you'll keep the UAV ability, what else?

You'll give them a carbine.

And.......? What will take up slot 4,6, and 7?

I'm re-iterating this, I'm not trying to flame, I'm simply curious as to what you would put in it's (the current officer loadout) place.

Maybe make a device for calling down artillary strikes or something?

Yeah, do they ever call laser strikes in star wars? i cant remember, but if they could that would be something i would add

Also i think that The Preacher is right, being the squad leader isnt about getting kills, its about making your squad more succesful, and let me tell you, I can rack up more points with being an officer then anyone else with not only kills from the turret, but from healing, recharding, and squad leader points.  Whether you could get more points being another class, i dont know, but the officers are extremely helpful and a great addition to battlefield, i just hope they are a little expanded in the future releases

kinda random, but i was wondering whether anyone was bothered by the friendly comment the rebels say "I hope i dont get posted on hoth"
1.  ITS A SECRET BASE!  they shouldnt be blurting it out casually while they are in the midst of a battle with the imps!
2.  In half of the maps, hoth is already destroyed.  Not to mention escape of hoth, i dont even need to explain that, and what about the actualy map where you're on hoth

same thing goes for the imperials and the death star, its already blown up in half the maps

I don't think they do it in the movies, but there's no reason it's not possible to call down a turbolaser strike from orbit........donno if you want artillary in FS though.

As for the hoth thing,

1. In half the maps it's already found out. tongue

2. On hoth, they should change it too "I hope I don't get posted on......wait, dammit I am!"

As for the death star, they could be talking about the second one.
