Re: Dead? hamsters I hope not...

Ya ive been noticing too less and less people.. This is because Space battle gets very boring, And for some reason no one ever wants to change maps,  Playing the same map over and over and over in this mod get's very tiresome, think we need a new map asap... mabye some of those player made ones if your not close to finishing the real ones.

Re: Dead? hamsters I hope not...

Btw. here is a tip that might show you a few more populated servers.
Go into your profiles folder and open general.con
Then delete all entries of the form:
GeneralSettings.addServerHistory "77.111.192.217" 51849 "FR - VeryGames.net - FirstStrike RC1 Server" 312367351

It is my experience that if you had a crash then that server will remain crashed in you history, and never show up again.
But if you delete the history entry BF will refresh the server.

Look in your History tab, if you have red servers there then this is worth a try

Ignoring the fact the mod is in desperate need of more maps (yeah we all know it), I think there is one big factor that is global for all mods really:

ITS SO BLOODY LATE!!! The work done is stellar and it takes alot of time to make mods, especially when its by people with lives... But the popularity of the primary game is failing. BF2142 is a year old: The first release of FS should have been out long ago.

I do miss the days modding was all about getting crap versions out ASAP to draw attention. Public alpha testing, not secrecy and teasers. The first DC versions where all about pulling in potential players for the future. They released something within a couple of months of BF1942 release (with the infamous backflipping helicopter and German-Iraqi soldiers on BF1942 maps) and kept building on it.

Good point.  I have all but lost all interest in FH2 because of this.

Also, as pointed out above, it's all about people wanting that "old style" feel of the old mods for BF1942.  I started to make a "remake" of BC Canyon from GC, but without a direct copy of the map, I am afraid even it would not "feel" the same.  One thing that server admins can do is take off friendly fire.  I know it makes it more "un realistic" but it also goes a long way to making it more "old school" feeling.  I play on a Special Forces server all the time because of two reasons. One is the map (Warlord) and two is the fact they turn off all friendly fire.  Yes I know not realistic, but a hell of a lot of fun.

Of course we're not dead.  In fact we're about to release 1.2!  Check it out!

But consider this the "attention getter".  We are now going into debate on whether to push ahead and complete the mod in one monumental massive stroke or whether to put out continuous updates to keep people topped up smile  Thoughts and opinions are welcome

My opinion - minor releases on basic maps (i.e. nothing too groundbreaking) and major on big changes/maps.  To clarify, I'd suggest working on big-features X,Y, and Z for R2.  However, in parallel, take what is in R1 (plus maybe a few new textures) and make what  "basic" maps.  An example would be a Felucia map with some new foliage but generally a regular infantry map with the classes, kits, vehicles etc..  When R2 is ready, you release it with the new features and whatever maps you have that rely on those features.  For example, Hoth will need AT-ATs and probably a bunch of other cool stuff, so it would come with R2 (that's release 2, not R2 of the D2 variety).

Re: Dead? hamsters I hope not...

I think dawdler is right, actually. I, too, have lost interest in FH2. I used to go there several times each day and post on their forums, now I only go there rarely, read the news post and leave. They need to get their mod released, and fast.

As for updates, I say the latter. A bit more cumbersome for the players, but keeps attention on the mod. I'm a modder myself, of a big, slow project (see my sig'), and I want to release it as one big thing, not as several small releases, but I notice that my updates aren't getting as much attention as before. Time to get something done and released.
