You could make the trenches in the hightmap, then paint the "lead" side with a concrete or stone detail texture.  That would give the look of the front (lead) side of the trench being reinforced.

To nitpick, the terrain doesn't have to be icy in order for trenches or snow caves to be constructed. It's enough that the snow hardens, which it pretty much always does after some time on the ground. Usually it's only the surface snow (the top inch or so) that's too powdery to be used for even snowballs.

While it's nice to create the basic heightmap from Terragen or something along those lines, you're definitely gunna have to make a lot of manual changes to it in the editor, just keep that in mind smile

Oh thats hightmap hmm. you can make trenches just not 90 degree trenches in hightmap in editor which is a horrible program i might add. saving thing in editor are a nightmare it crashes a lot and want work at all after windows up dates and then i have to completly reinstall every thing.
