Re: FIRST STRIKE WIKI

The Wiki also needs an FAQ section, which has to include a step-by-step 'Installing and Getting Started' guide. Here's an idea for a layout (my WIP Project Reality FAQ).

Oh, and gathering all the controls into one section is probably a very good idea.

Alright, I've updated the entries for four of the six capital starships, including the Corvette. I've also updated the game mods section.

Edit: To whoever did the Gallofree Transport entry after I did... excellent work. Can you do something similar for the others?

I'm also going to add a general vehicle controls section.

Thanks-- just finished the Rebel transports, I'll help out with Imperials tomorrow...

I've never heard of an FAQ being in a Wiki, but since most of this stuff can only be found in forum stickies, it'd be nice to place them in an additional easy-to-find location (nice template-BTW).

I had already made an install/getting-started guide, and placed it in the first-article on the homepage... should we consider making a seperate article about this?:

Re: FIRST STRIKE WIKI

Oh, and terminology - we should decide on whether or not to use 'correct' naval/maritime terminology (starboard, dorsal, etc.) or layman terms such as right, upper, and so on. I say we use the 'correct' terminology, and add a 'Terminology' article listing and explaining each term. Whatever is chosen, it should be global across the whole Wiki - if one article talks about 'dorsal' turrets, all articles should.

There's also some redundancies, such as 'dorsal upper' (upper means dorsal, so just dorsal or upper would do), but it's generally taking shape nicely. I like how info is gathered in the infoboxes. Oh, and if articles end up being shorter than the infoboxes, they should be gathered in a collective article - one on Rebel cap ships, one on Imp cap ships, and so on. But that probably won't happen.

Re: FIRST STRIKE WIKI

I agree, we need to settle on the cruiser terminology...

I suggest we use "upper" and "lower", removing any "firing arc" comments (if it says upper cannon, I expect it can't shoot below the horizon) along the way.

And although I think "starboard turbolasers" sound much cooler, it is nautical jargon that many gamers won't actually know without hitting Dictionary.com. So I recommend the use "left" and "right".

Re: FIRST STRIKE WIKI

w00t! big_smile Our home page is finally free of all red links, every article that founder TIEpilot234 said our Wiki needs is now made.

http://firststrikemod.wikia.com/

It's a great start. Still a few more things I'd like to see...

- Add Images from official galleries
Because there's a lot of cool shots that we don't have yet.
- Make Wiki compatible with every skin
Because it currently only works right with QuartzGaming.
- Make an "Armor and You" Guide.
We need something like this, it would be so helpful.
- Go through this forum, see what's laying around that should be included too.

And most importantly
- Keep adding new content...

...Because this encyclopedia is far from finished. We still need a "How to Get in the AT-AT Guide", the player-made Suggestions on handling each vehicle (see the "What are your Vehicle Tips?" thread for ideas), maps of the battlefields, etc.

Re: FIRST STRIKE WIKI

- Make an "Armor and You" Guide.

Add lots of guides. Tactical guides, guides to various classes, dogfighting guides, formation guides, street combat guides, and so on. Pull from military and sim sites and manuals and the like (for example, the Falcon 4.0 manual describes various formations and their pros and cons), not just from us players. I imagine clans could have a field day with them. As a matter of fact, I just looked through the formations guide in the Falcon 4.0 Allied Force manual, and thought, 'hey, this isn't just for F-16 sim pilots. We could use these formations in First Strike!'.

- Add Images from official galleries

I was just thinking about that, add lots of images. They should be high-quality and, preferably, have a purpose other than mere illustration.

I suggest we use "upper" and "lower", removing any "firing arc" comments (if it says upper cannon, I expect it can't shoot below the horizon) along the way.

Definitely keep the firing arcs. Not all of them are as self-explanatory as you'd think.

As for dorsal and ventral, they're just two words. Won't take hard to learn.

And although I think "starboard turbolasers" sound much cooler, it is nautical jargon that many gamers won't actually know without hitting Dictionary.com. So I recommend the use "left" and "right".

Might just be that I live in a nation with a long maritime history, but my impression is that a lot of people know their port from their starboard. And in my eyes, it's not about it being 'cool' at all, but about practicality. Take, for example, the Star Destroyer turbo laser battery you need to destroy in the Escape from Hoth map. Do you say that they're on the left or right side of the ship? I'd say left, but then people won't know if you mean left to people approaching the ship from the bow, or the left-side (port) of the ship. You could write 'the battery closes to the buoy, but simply saying 'starboard' is shorter and leaves absolutely no room for confusion, as 'starboard' refers to 'the right side of a vessel as perceived by a person on board the ship and facing the bow (front)'. Let's use port and starboard, and have them link to a Terminology page.

Remember... KISS. Keep It Simple Stupid

Port and starboard were invented to keep things simple.

Edit: We really don't need two separate, distinct links to the same article. When both Imperial and Rebel medics have the same article, the defibrillator doesn't need one link to Imperial medics and one to Rebel medics.
