And besides, what would you have rather seen on screen, towering four legged metal walking behemoths?
Or a couple of boring old hovertanks?

Truly, Echo Base was over run in no time. The AT-AT's combat capabilities were perfect for the mission AND they looked awesome doing it. lol They were greatly feared for a good reason.
Contrary to multiple EU sources (and by that, I mean A LOT of EU sources), The Battle of Hoth was the very first engagement where the Rebels used the T-47's harpoon and tow cable system against the AT-ATs. Which was, of course, devised by Luke as a last ditch effort to slow their advance. The T-47 is NOT a military craft, but rather a civilian craft modified for combat duty in the Alliance and, as we all know, further modifications had to be made to adapt them to Hoth's extreme temperatures.
As much as I like the A5 Juggernauts, I'm glad George decided to go with the AT-ATs for the BoH. However, I must say the newer A6 Juggernauts were frick'n AWESOME at the Battle of Kashyyk. lol
