Re: Moving in capital ships?

Hey, i got another one of my crazy ideas. For those of you who saw my "Pieces of Capital Ships" Post, think about this: What if all the ships could move around the map like they do now, and then an enemy ship could come up behind a capital ship and disable it's engines, so it would be disabled and immobile. Then you could take some sort of boarding craft and board the disabled ship and take it over. The disabled ship could still have working turrets so it would have some kind of defense, but it would also have interiors because it would not be moving. It could work, couldn't it?

what? It doesn't sound so far-fetched! Think of the engines on capital ships like the turrets on the ISD in the escape from hoth map. You shoot the turrets enough, they get destroyed. Think of that except with engines, and an explosion when they get destroyed? ...couldn't that work?

Re: Moving in capital ships?

Yes its possible.   The Titan is disabled after it receives a certain amount of damage.  Its possible that a that the same code might work to disable a capital ship after receiving too much damage.

Re: Moving in capital ships?

The only problem is that it's still going to be a pain to move around inside it after it's been crippled, unless it coincidentally happened to be disabled just as it's somehow level. You'd also have people try to board it before it was stopped, resulting in lag issues.

You can make the ship handle like those in GC, however, that is, unable to roll or pitch, but it'd be a big sacrifice in my opinion. And taking over whole capital ships would skew the balance against the previous owners.

Maybe in a special map mode you could have a piracy scenario where the pirates are to cripple the engines of a ship, which just for that map would be forced to not pitch or roll, for then to board it and capture it somehow to steal its cargo (vessels can't be mobile control points, can they?), but other than that, I don't really like the idea. Boarding cap ships to distract their crews from manning the ship was fun, but to be honest, I like the current way better. Let's leave boarding to certain 'boarding maps'.

Re: Moving in capital ships?

OR, maybe when the engines were disabled it could drift into a righted position. Nobody would be able to board it until it was disabled, so it wouldn't cause the ridiculous lag.

About the balance of taking over; Remember, this ship is DISABLED, so it is basically a small space station that you can walk around inside/spawn in/shoot turrets from until it is destroyed. It will not be mobile since it was disabled prior to boarding.

I seriously hope that by some miraculous effort in programming the devs make it so you can walk around in the ships as you could in GC while retaining all of the pitch and roll aspects, that way we wouldn't have to deal with this debate. My favorite memory of cap ships in GC is how they tied into Tanaab with the space station. I remember piloting a ship right above/next to the station then dropping onto it with an escape pod. It was fun... I wouldn't want to have to give that up just because the developers at DICE/EA were too lazy to put in the proper programming they used in 1942 -.-

Re: Moving in capital ships?

I think the devs were pondering stuff like that for a possible carrier ship that could move... I'm not totally sure about it though. It would take a lot of work though I would imagine.
