Topic: Flight physics

Hi all,

Newb here.First off I just want to say hello from Ireland!Loving your mod and this is in no way directed as an insult to all of the amazing hard work put into it!

But I'm just curious. Considering the nature of space and zero g physics why would the spacecraft in starwars be so limited to near atmospheric flight characteristics?Especially when normal zero G allows for far greater maneuverability.

I mean no offence but disregarding the whole "laser" thing a BSG Viper would take an x-wing hands down any day.

What does everyone else think??

Welcome to the Mod/Forums, Vip3r.  smile

The new BS:G Vipers and even the Babylon 5 Starfuries would cause serious problems if they were allowed to use their own, 'real' physics.  They do move more realistically in a combination of zeroG within a vacuum.  That said, zero-G alone is in effect in FS.  Trust me, it was kind of odd in GC when you constantly had to give thrust to keep the nose of your fighter up.  tongue

Star Wars, however, has never had "real physics".  Watching the films will make that obvious: every ship seems to be flying in an atmosphere (if not on wires). roll  Just a different fictional universe.

If you need some kind of 'real' explanation... um... Well, it was a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away.  Maybe their galaxy had some atmosphere.  Or... those midichlorians were everywhere, back then.  mad

Today's spelling/grammar tip: There = a (sometimes conceptual) place. "There is my car." or "There is such a thing as magic."  // Their = posessive. "Their meat is full of worms." // They're = contraction of <they are>. "They're crazy!" // "They're trying to put their shoes up there."

i wouldnt think anything would be zero g because the force of gravity has no limit to its range

Re: Flight physics

Terrorek is right, George Lucas modeled the dog fights of Star Wars after WWII dogfights, also taking into account the atmosphere, so the space in FS has some sort of hybrid universal physics like starwars, not true zero G but not really atmospheric either.

Off topic again, but i'm from Ireland too.

An Bhfuil cead agam go dtí an leitheris!

Yes, Starwars physics is entirely different, it's far more cinematic. Which is entirely understandable.

This is not nessicarily true. Both on the quantum (super small) and super large scales the nature of Gravity is still baffiling physists. Hell we don't even know what gravity really is! Newton says its an attractive FORCE but Eistien says its the 'bending' of space time by a mass!

But in anycase gravity exerts an incredibly small force on an object, so much that it takes incredibly large mass acting on a small mass to even produce a Newton of Force! Therefore such technicalities like you mention are entirely ignored by the scietific community. In most cases Space offers an entirely Zero-G environment!

okay move on ^_^
