Re: Old Star Wars Games

I dont think you can really compare XvT to X-Wing or Tie Fighter. They were single player campaign games, whereas Tie Fighter was deliberately programmed to be an online gaming experience with little in the way of single player until the release of the BoP expansion. This would explain the lack of objects as they were trying to make use of as much bandwidth as possible in the early days of dial up modems.

Since XvT is still played online today but a lot of players in clan tournaments is proof that it was succesful in filling that role and is still by far one of the most popular Star Wars title games EVER released. XWA tried to expand on the graphics and again brought back the single player element, but its online play was terrible. Since it used a similar engine to XvT I am not sure what went wrong with it and it never proved as popular as the other three titles.

Shame they never created a sequel sad

If anyone would like to read an interview I did with one of the developers of XvT and XWA (Albert mack) check out:

It also carries information on where you can still play XvT and XWA online in an enviroment similar to the MSN Gaming zone before they shut off support. Or you can also look at:

Re: Old Star Wars Games

Its very easy to compare the two because one was the predecessor , and the other was the offspring .
Its like looking at a baby monkey sitting next to its mama ...lol
\And you totally missed the point I made about XMS and EMS , but no one in this current age of computer consumerism looks past the wrapper anymore.
Xwing vs Tie couldnt come close to managing the requirements of Xwing, because its being run in XMS, had nothing to do with the online element of either game .
If we had games run in EMS these days and programs written to squeeze all they can get outa the computer ( like they did back in the days of Xwing -circa 1994) we would be playing 500 player games of such complexity nothing presently available could compare ...   but the cost of the game would have to be a thousand dollars a copy ... to offset the much higher programming costs.  thats the reason  computer games turned off the road like they did , and became what we all know them to be instead . ..    LOL

Ooops.. yep you're right.. It was Jedi Knight 2.

I'd agree that the old vector graphics had a certain appeal to them.  The old Star Wars arcade game used to be my favorite.  Now I enjoy it through a Mame32 rom.  That and BattleZone were kickin in their day.  I used to love that stuff.  I grew to love real 3D rendering as it grew to what it is today much more though... but when I'm feeling nostolgic.. I still play the old stuff.

Mame , now thats some cool schtuff .   Star wars coin-operated  game was the original ...
But lets go back to the oldest incarnation of all ...

Space War

A 1977 vector graphic monochrome game featuring a ship vs another ship .
And what shapes did they give to the two ?
ICONs
One was what looks perfectly like an imperial star-destroyer , and the other is the old school star-trek enterprise class ship.
Its safe to say that the 1st starship that ever resembled a slice of pizza , is the star-destroyer.  lol
