Formation flying is something we all should work on. It has tactical uses (for example, if a flight group of TIEs fly right behind each others, enemies ahead of them will have a hard time making out their true numbers due to the fact that their IFF brackets will overlap) and flight sim aces say that following the leader through twists and turns improves your dogfighting skills. I believe them.

You can also use this tactic to concentrate fire on a target while presenting them with practically one target to fire back at, plus because the IFF brackets are overlapping it makes it hard to get a lock on a target at range because you can't identify the true centre and concentrate your fire there, so essentially the tactic makes you yourself harder to hit, and also doubles or trebles (depending how many of you are in tight formation) the firepower you are hurling at your chosen target.

Also the Battlerecorder files should be freely available, I have all the BR files from the games I took part in last weekend, wasn't there for all the games though.

Re: Community game today!

Some day I want to try a coordinated B-Wing attack where the Flight Group brackets and then attacks from different directions, with one firing lasers and ion cannons to cripple the target's turbolasers, and the others letting loose lasers and torpedoes.

Oh, and Ty, since we've got a new CG coming up, maybe this thread should be renamed '3/8 Community Game' or whatever?

Re: Community game today!

When it comes to attack formations ...
I will command my fighters to attack in a "line-abreast" formation , exposing all weapons on the target simultaneously ... plus it offers more protection as enemy gunners have to divide up their fire, instead of spraying into a narrow cone containing your entire attack group.
In the community game, i did exactly that, me an another gunner would open up at a group of targets flying in line-astern formation, and they appeared to be a cluster of grapes for the picking.

For long-range attacks, I maintain that flying in a 'column formation' is a good idea, as it leaves you unable to tell how many fighters you're up against. You can always break up when approaching attack range.

Re: Community game today!

One problem with formations is that it increases the chances of collisions, particularily when somebody has to engage in evasive maneauvers. In the last CG when the rebel fighters were defending the gallofree there were at least 5 collisions. However I am of the opinion that the benifits outway the risks, I would have to go with the "line-abreast" formation as Luke skyraper has said it allows you to dish out more fire power and spreads the enemy fire.

Re: Community game today!

Well the tactic I am talking about is not being directly behind each other but in a tight overlapping formation which makes the IFF brackets unclear for enemy fighters to target, but allows you all to bring guns to bare on your target. I agree though that when you get in close it is time to break up and engage, evasive manoeuvres in that style of formation would end your battle badly real quick, but at long range it is a sound enough tactic.
