Topic: I demand fs mod for battlefield 3

Well, since bf3 is coming, i would like to see fs mod in it , because of the new game engine and graphics... anyway, i think its gonna rock ^^

Im just suggesting that fs devs should prepare to mod bf3 as soon as it releases ^^

Re: I demand fs mod for battlefield 3

You make the assumption that BF3 will be moddable.

Bad Company 2 is not moddable in any way, shape or form.  Although Battlefield Play4Free appears to have limited moddablility, it's running off an older engine I believe.  BF3 will likely be based on an improved version of Frostbite (BC2 Engine), and will not have much modding functionality, if anything at all.

I demand EA DICE make First Strike into a full official game.  If there has ever been a mod deserving of such treatment, it's the awesome First Strike mod.  Of course, it should have JETPACKS (with rocket launchers). smile

Frostbite was designed on consoles, and adapted for PC use. There is likely some parts of of the engine which borrows from console technology, which means that DICE would have to pay *huge* license fees (if they'd be allowed at all) to release an editor.   If they did it, it most certainly wouldn't be free and would be coupled with a fairly large price tag - that'd stop a lot of mods dead in their tracks.

There's also the fact there isn't currently a standalone editor for Frostbite.   The BF2 editor is fantastic, you can really do amost anything within the one program for BF2.  Frostbite editor is actually a series of different programs for different tasks, and all the files are shared on a cloud based system I believe (I'm sure this was mentioned in an interview with the guy doing the patches for Frostbite, correct me if I'm wrong).  It's simply not designed for making mods, and making a new editor is probably just as big a task, if not bigger, than making a full new game.

Quite a lot of games these days don't have mod functionality.  Unfortunately, it's just the way game technology is moving.  More games are cross-platform these days, and cross-platform usually (not always) means no mod support.  Dedicated PC games are also starting to become so complex that the developers are looking for ways to make production easier for THEM instead of wasting resources on making games mod friendly.

Personally, I'm holding out hope that BF3 will be moddable, and I don't think DICE has said if it will be or not.  However, even if they do say it's possible, I wouldn't get too excited.  They said BC2 would be moddable but changed their tune when the game was closer to releasing.

Re: I demand fs mod for battlefield 3

this is a link to info from one of the DICE devs concerning modablity of the BF3 Frostbite engine: http://www.bfeditor.org/forums/index.php?app=portal

Basically, the Frostbite engine does not have the scripting capability of the refractor engine used for BF2 and BF2142 that makes the game possible to create a total conversion mod like First Strike.   Now, the devs did say that the new Frostbite engine was easier to mod than the only one used for Bad Company, but there are still too many license issues with 3rd party tools used in the development of games using the Frostbite engine.  If any type of mod tools come out from the DICE, it would most likely be a sandbox type editor where you can change the spawns.  I sure would not expect anything close to the functionality of the BF2editor.

Re: I demand fs mod for battlefield 3

To take the optimistic viewpoint for a change, Dnarmo's link is about FrostBite 1.5, which is currently in BC2 (and was being used for the development of 1943 I belive, which has also just been cancelled).  Bf3 is being developed on Frostbite 2.0 which in the linked article is a more stramlined and efficient system than 1.5, however it still leaves a lot of doubts as to if there will be an editor for bf3 or not.
