Re: Getting the Community Popular Again

The tournaments will do good things for the community, but the word needs to get out for a while first.
Getting the word to the masses, is the most important part.
Hopefully with enough early notice, people who dont normally play will be able to DL and get practicing.
I will have to watch and read about it in the after-action reports.

Do..or do not, there is no try !

Sorry, I'm going off on a tangent. Let's have a little Brainstorming session and try and come up with some methods to get more people playing.

Well, one thing that could pretty easily be done is make the mod more intuitive. I and  others have suggested we pull a PR and give each device in the mouse scroll tab a label so that players can easily see what it does. Currently you just see a silhouette of the weapon or device, which doesn't tell anyone much.

I agree. There should also be a label telling how many people you need in your squad for the items requiring squad members.

Re: Getting the Community Popular Again

In an effort to increase the popularity of this community, the team has decided that it is in our best interest to cater to a wider audience, which DUKE represents.  We've unleashed our latest version today to accompany this, go ahead and update and join DSGaming.net (sure to be up-to-date) to try it out.

Re: Getting the Community Popular Again

Heya, here's a couple thoughts that have been rumbling around in mind...

Map style description:
not sure if this has been mentioned yet, but I notice when new players join, Endor for example, they will try and take points that cant be taken back due to the push map deal. The thing is most maps seem to have sort of push system but it's not that apparent. Even if you read the little blurb at the start, which Im guessing most new players dont do <I didn't when I first started> this style of taking points can be misread. Sometimes during a game, you'll see a number of WTF's and then "so and so has been disconnected from server" never to be seen again. It'd be better if there's less WTF's and disconnects.

Propostion :  The map has the arrows and stuff but maybe also a brief description of the push style can be written right on the map. So, if a new player joins, you can just tell them to open the map and read the deal. Is that possible?

Time zones.
Im in the great white North (Canada eh) and have the link to the servers available page Game-Monitor. One thing I notice is if you click the graph for activity during the day, there is a fare number of players at about 1PM my time, evening time in Europe? I'm on the west coast. That means Im usually swamped with work at that point. I get home about 6pm PST (2am Europe times or so?) and there's 2 or 3 people on a good night. It'd be nice if there were more North Americans(or whomever) on during our evening times.
Propostion  - Have another community game at the opposite end of the current community games. So like Wednesday or something but at 8-11pm EST. My timezone is PST, 3 hours behind that, but I think EST is the most popular time zone for things in North America? Not sure on that, but you get the concept, yeah?

Lastly-
another common comment heard, usually during any of the space maps, is "I hate space maps....I like the ground, my feet in the soil...sand...it gets everywhere...wanna make out?" Ok not the last bit, but there seems to be a number of ground pounders who only dig the ground maps. But believe me, the flyboys are looking for a game like this. Even without the ability to pan view, or manage energy resources, the space and even ground with flying maps are so great. Sometimes those space maps get really epic.

Proposition : Is it possible to have a server dedicated to space and a few dedicated to ground only maps? Today I did notice a server has a description of "Space Map week". Thank the Force for that!

And a general suggestion to flight simmers. Get a fricken stick. Now, sure at times someone using mouse will cut ya, but using a joystick just adds a bit more fun to it, me thinks.

That'll be all.

p.s. enjoying the video recaps.
p.s.s. the victory music at the end of the Battle of Yavin is a great touch. Could that music, or similar victory treats be added to the end of the other maps too?

Interesting stuff here, Tron.

I see where you are coming from, and I like it.  Actually writing the objectives on the minimap would be a good idea... tha mount of people that miss the "gamemode" bit of the loading screen is unbeliveable.

There was, for a while, an official Commnity Game targetted towards US players organised by Rogue Tribe's Sadwhalesong. Not sure what the story with this is anymore.  There was a short discussion about this, but I belive at the moment there isn't a reliable US based server to host it on (Saying that, Then bloke who hosts DS's servers is thinking about also getting a box in the US, that would give us the boost we need, I belive.)

At one point, DS hosted 2 servers one geared towards only space an done towards only land.  Unfortunately, there wasn't and still isn't enough players to make this a viable option yet.  Once there is, however, I will speak with bloke that hosts DSs box, or even my own community, about having a server setup for just space.

I would love that. Unfortunately, we don't have the same bloke for music as we used to.  Supposedly some guy has offered to help out, but we've gotten nothing from him yet sad
