Re: Getting the Community Popular Again

Agree with Twigs. It's not that complicated. Noobs must be overwhelmed by everything new that they can't stop and read objectives. Don't think that stage lasts long, though.

Re: Getting the Community Popular Again

1. The mod is unintuitive.

2. This is a bad thing because any program is supposed to be intuitive and user-friendly, to make it easy to get into and use. This has to do with the overall experience of the end users.

3. The fact that it's unintuitive also means that you have rounds where people don't know what devices to use at what moments, gallofrees being run off the edge of the map, people camping a CP you can't cap, antitank mines being laid to stop infantry, etc.

It's easy for you guys with hundreds of hours of playtime to look down at newcomers and call them noobs, but try to put yourself in their place for a sec. I tried to have a go at 2142 some time ago and was utterly lost (also totally forgot there is probably a popup hud system in 2142), not knowing what pretty much any of the gizmos given to me did until I'd wasted them by throwing them at the ground (which I did hoping they wouldn't blow up and hurt passerbys happening too close). Does this make me a noob in SamZi's eyes? Very likely. Would the mod be easier to play if gizmos had labels? Definitely.

Re: Getting the Community Popular Again

2142 is untuitive, FS is not.

Took me ages (and sometimes I still get confused) to get the hang of 2142. FS I picked up in less than a day.  Maybe a few things could HELP FS, such as writing objectives of the minimap... at least those empty bits of it which are just Out Of Bounds.

FS isn't complicated, but we can easily make it even EASIER for nubbies to understand.  Doing such a thing benefits the nubbies, and benifits the vet's who will have people who at least have an idea of what to do on their team.

Sure it looks confusing at first but you'll get used to it in no time. Of course you'll have to keep the 3d map icons on to know where you're going.

You could label the items in the inventory but scribbling objectives in the map or somewhere else is unnecessary. If new players can't actually find the objectives then there's something wrong with their eyes. They're probably not paying attention to anything like that the first few days of playing.

Re: Getting the Community Popular Again

In space maps, your basically just looking for a target.
Except escape.
The target is an icon of the ship, with a distance added.
Would it really be so hard as to put the icon, objective1, and the distance.
I dont know as i dont help to create games.
Nubs may read the objective during the load screen, but may not know which is the objective in game.
Or which should be the first objective, and so on.
I have no problems with the way it is now, when i can play.
However if your going to try to get more people into the community, you should make the transition as easy as possible.
I also believe if you want people to know how to play, that there should be a link to the Manual and FAQ's on the FS homepage, nice big and bold.
Not that it is hard to find in the forums, just that if its easier to access, then more people will read it.

Re: Getting the Community Popular Again

I seem to recall a nice big link, right at the top of every page.  It says "WIKI" and at the bottom of the downloads page it says "Questions? Concerncs? Go here!" and links the wiki also.  that's our manual.

Oh, Darn.. sorry Imp, i guess my eyes are getting bad.
I guess i just didnt see it with the text thats smaller then the "WIKI"  in your latest post.
Guess that makes me a nub.
Guess if it stood out a little more i would not have missed it.
Along with the link in the downloads section that blends right in with all the other grey on grey blandness.  or is it gray on gray?
I appologize for not seeing these earlier.
