Without the launcher you will not be able to update the game and will get errors when trying to connect to servers.

There is a way though.

Go to program files/eagames (or electronic arts or whatever!) battlefield 2142. There should be 2 game launcher files, bf2142.exe and firststrike.exe. Double clicking firststrike.exe SHOULD launch the mod directly.

Doing this launches BF2142.  If you want to launch the mod directly, set up a shortcut to launch EITHER BF2142.exe or FirstStrike.exe (or edit an existing shortcut) and add +modPath mods\firststrike to the end of the "target" field.

However, as Twigs said, without the launcher, you won't be able to update first strike, and you will CTD when loading maps.
