Topic: True Planetary Engagement

Ya know, I was thinking, something that would really set this mod apart from the others and perhaps permanetly let First Strike escape it's GC shadow would be to have true planetary engaments. By Planetary I mean similtaneous space and ground battles at the same time, for instance hoth where xwings and transports would try to get by ISDs after taking off from hoth, where the defence of Echo Base continues. At first the idea sounds absurd, but i was thinking with some cleverness it just may be possible. Obviously the map couldn't be made big enough to acomidate all the space that would take up normally, but what if you could use optical illusion instead.

Perhap's about half way into the maximum reach of the sky on the map a horizontal 'film' could be put. This surface would be dynamic and function just like a skybox does, wiht clouds, and possibly star destroyers moving around up there. However this thin 'film' is permeable allowing fighters to pass through it. On the other side of this 'film' would be the other half of the sky area, which would be themed like space. The film itself, when viewed from space lookin back down at hoth, would be another dynamic view, using the same example, of orbital hoth. So basically you have both space an ground combat goin on, with the ground below the film, and the space above. To further the optical illusion, there might be a pair of films instead of one, with the area inbetween the two films filled with some thick atmospheric clouds or hyper space, or something that would make the transition from air to space more belieavable. The idea would have to be nutured an shaped into giving off a believable optical illusion, but if done just right you could come away with some great gameplay I think. You could have orbital ship's able to bombard the planet bellow, an ground based ion cannons, an other stuff like taht. Just an idea. That can be applied to many areas of th mod i think.

Re: True Planetary Engagement

We would LOVE to do this. In fact we have discussed this a while back. However, it just isn't possible with the BF 2 engine. I mean I'll leave it up to the coders to decide if that can be implemented but I don't think it can be. Also, doing that would cause MAJOR lag in the server, something we are trying to avoid. But it is a good idea. Maybe in a future engine. Perhaps Battlefield 3. XD

Re: True Planetary Engagement

That's intresting...

What could be done is, let's say on one planet you have this major ground battle. Where you can capture flags aswell.

But in the meanwhile you could have the same in space, that you have flags to capture in the air, with hovering with your aircraft...

Re: True Planetary Engagement

the only engine i know of with a plane that warps you to another location, is the UT2004 engine, shame nothing like that exists in BF engine... great idea but shame..

Re: True Planetary Engagement

I wouldn't rule it out completely just yet but we need to focus on the more doable things at the moment.

i didn't really mean warping i ment something that would give you the illusion of passing through a planet's atmosphere into space. Like a layer that when you enter with your ship is extremely cloudy an visibility is like, 0. This would be teh 'upper atmosphere' which is really just a thin layer in the sky. When your passing through the layer maybe it could make your ship move much slower to give the illusion of a longer jorney thorugh a greater distance, an with no landmarks to check himself agianst the player would be fooled. Of course i know absolutely zilch about programming, an i'd bet having that bi layer up there would probally be super laggy as you've said. Best leave it to the proffesionals i guess smile

Re: True Planetary Engagement

I really like your idea. Something along the lines of manipulating the fog and the background to produce a dual layer effect. Hmm intresting.
