Anyway I thought I'd throw my two cents into this topic as I laboured on a Battle of Endor space map for the GC mod for a long time, and released it to mostly rave reviews.
I'd say separate the ground and space maps. It just allows everything to be fully featured in each map. In the space map, you have a massive space battle with many static capital ships and fighters spawning on both sides of the map. The Imperial commander would have control of the anti-capital ship Superlaser and it would work like the artillary except with a long recharge rate.
You can create such a great atmosphere for the Battle of Endor by placing area SFX all around the map, as well as spawning random explosions around the map as vehicles. Worked for me anyway.
I'm going to be working on this as a third party map once the base release of First Strike is done.
