Why not just do it like ArcAngel suggested, only be able to open then cockpit when the landing gear are  deployed or something like that.

thats wut i wuz talking about
wait another idea... mabey its possible to not let ppl bail once the ships armor is BELOW a certain amount
then to bail the pilot has to repair 1st then bail!

Hey, bailing can be fun if you're doing the right kind of bailing!  When you have more than 50 percent health you should be able to bail with no penalty.  In GC I would bail into other enemies ships and lethal dose them all smile
