Re: Keep the Cockpit

Pffff, any1 who turns off rybots beatiful cockpits wants shooting. Looking at the screenshots from XWA, i dont think FS's 'pits will take up that much room.

Re: Keep the Cockpit

I've given Jerk's idea on targeting computers some thought, and it's a good one. But yes, show everything, asteroids, planet surface, infantry, whatever the Heck. If it could be rendered as wireframes the way the "real" computers rendered it, that'd be even better.

Isnt the B-Wing actually MEANT to dogfight? Hence heavy armament and was in response to the lack of a really good fighter-bomber role craft? Not really up to spec on the details of the B-Wing but thats what I thought it was for...

The B-Wing is a heavy bomber. Hence the heavy armament.

If you can't see the geometry you have to switch it off to navigate better. If you could still see the terrain and co the cockpit view would be useless.

And yes, the B-Wing is a heavy bomber, it's no dogfighter.

No, because it's very impeded if made according to the movies:

Not to mention it's all wire-frame rather than actual models, if that's somehow possible to make in-game, which it probably isn't. Either way, it's an impeded view, and it won't let you look around you. So it'd be for attack runs only.

I'm not thinking about the ridiculously over-powered computer in the Rogue Squadron games.

Re: Keep the Cockpit

B-Wing

Wiki B-Wing

So, according to these, the B-Wing was intended as a capital ship fighter, "bomber."  It could dog-fight, probably about as well as the Y-Wing, but because of the strain on the static cockpit and the wings gyroscopic... stuff... it made it hard to fly in dogfights.

And, I like the idea of a targetting computer.  It would be real interesting, and certainly beneficial, in my opinion, to be able to use that.  However, there would have to be some purpose to it if it was wire-frames only; perhaps hardpoints on ships (if there even will be "hardpoints") could light up?

Hmm... You've got a point with the wireframes... But how are they going to be rendered? The wireframe rendering would be really tricky to get right... Though it's possible in the HL2 engine it might not be in the BF2142 one. Maybe when you change to that mode the game's entire rendering thing switches to the wireframes. It would have to be clientside to work. This again could maybe give cheaters a hole for hacking..?

EDIT: I think I just found it out: When in the targeting computer mode EVERYTHING gets rendered in wireframes and all the features I said to help you aim like the beep noise that tells you to shoot when you'd land a hit... But you can't see the damage your fighter has taken and you don't have any instruments for navigating, so you'd still need the normal view for those things.

It could lock onto ships for warhead attacks as well as offering a magnified view of what's ahead of you.

I wanted the targeting computer in GC, too, and there I'd make it so that fighters didn't have crosshairs in cockpit view and the computer gave you a magnified view when you open the targeting computer, including, in fighters' case, crosshairs.

Your edit: I'd actually really like to see your entire HUD go away when you open the 'computer. As for how to render wireframes, I have no idea.
