No. People never listen to the commander in public games anyways. Devs made this mod to focus on squad leaders. They are the commander. If you can't figure out what to do by looking at the other squads on the minimap then tough luck your team will probably lose. You can invite the other Squad leaders to TS or type it out to the on team chat.

Commanders can put out orders to make sure that the squads spread out well and he makes them much more effective that way. You can say all this stuff with "Team Speak" and all that junk, but who can be bothered to alt+tab and join the TS server? Nobody. FS might crash when you try to get back in. Typing? Bad idea for many obvious reasons. The commander makes life easier.

Actually, I've been surprised at how organized and great things are in a squad. I actually feel like I'm in the movies. Especially the 2 ground maps besides Endor...They're great. We'll all be heading out, and Everytime we'll be going somewhere else, we'll have big firefights in the streets, with people deploying shields, and peeking aroung corners, untill we win and push forward, me throwing around bacta, them throwing out a good "humiliate" command.

Re: Lack of order in the servers, we need the commander back

It also depends on what squads and squad leaders can do. In Project Reality, squad leaders not only act as spawn points, they also have the ability to set up rally points which act as spawn points. Each squad can have one rally point, which can be replaced at any time, but only if they have four members or more, including the squad leader. Furthermore, you only have access to four basic kits and need to be in a squad of at least a couple of people to order more kits (which is done by moving to an APC, ammo box, etc. and selecting the new kit from a menu). In First Strike, it appears the squad leader has a couple of toys, too. Isn't the squad leader the only person who can deploy turrets?

I find that being a squad leader is much more enjoyable when it lets you do more than give orders and act as a spawn point. And yes, a well-organized squad is a force to be reckoned with.

One instance.. Gallofree ship not trying to escape from hoth instead flying around trying to take on empire capitol ships. they don't have the firepower for that, and that is not the objective.

Something similar happened to me once in GC. I was in a repair ship working on a damaged frigate, and a guy spawned aboard my ship. The ship has two laser turrets for self-defense, and he was manning one of them. We came under attack, and I figured I'd jump into the other ones briefly to help my comrade repel the TIE. What happens? He immediately jumps into the pilot's seat, stops repairing the frigate, and instead flies into deep space where he does nothing but sit there dead still, not returning to the turret and not moving the ship. I tried to tell him he was in a repair ship and to get back to the frigate, but he apparently suffered from deafness.

Everyone gets into the game(because its new), and flies around or runs around looking at things, and trying to shoot everything.

Very true. However, Commanders help matters when people get settled in.

The game (i think) is better, without commander. it forces squad leaders to be there commander and work with other squads for a more team oriented game.

The game's more team-oriented when everyone works together, and to work together effectively, they need to be co-ordinated. It's very hard for squads to co-ordinate each others. A commander can easily get an overview and go 'OK, now Squad 1 hold the north bunker, and Squad 2 hold the south bunker. Squad 3, you're the fire brigade, respond to either when they need help.' Squad Leaders can't do that.

Re: Lack of order in the servers, we need the commander back

Since weve given the officers some commander-esque abilities .. ie. the Locator/radar/UAV box ..what would the commander do apart from artillery?

I dont see the need for a commander at all TBH.

Plus, commanders cant have custom assets . So , if you wanted him(the imp commander) to be able to drop a Probe Droid on the battlefield ...the rebel commander would have a probe droid aswell. There you have 1 problem. Another problem is the commander features are virtually uncustomizable.
In the end i think putting more emphasis on squadplay is better , rather than everyone just being dependant on 1 person to call in UAV every 1minute
Something iv been thinkin about is how to get different squads intentionally linking up together

Re: Lack of order in the servers, we need the commander back

I have to agree, commander is not needed as he couldnt really do anything else than spam artillery (OK, ISD orbital barrage WOULD be bloody sweet, I admit...) all around the place and thats about it. People will learn to play FS as they learned to play BF2/2142 aswell. Commander is not needed in my opinion, at least not yet. Sure there will be lone-wolf "noobs" but every game has them and I dont see much of a problem in it. I believe that generally, when the people that got the brains (hopefully this means the mainstream) learns the reins, they will do things more properly. Remember, the mod has been out for roughly two days now, give the people some time to learn it and get used to it.

Old GC veterans remember the new release dates, each and every single one of em were filled with confused players as they tried to fiddle with the two braincells they had and how to figure out a new feature. big_smile

People will learn. Hopefully.

Speaking of commander, couple of people have discovered form time to time, they can be commander, and the suply crates look a little out of place in Mos Espa.
