Topic: Major problem! Potentially lethal to your hard drive!

Yes yes, we all know that when you get a lock-up, its not the end of the world; you go, "sigh, well, ctrl+alt+del dude. Ah! Look! I exited the game and I didnt even break a sweat!" But thats what I call a "passive lock-up".

The next level is the "Harrassment Lock-Up". You get this and you go, "damn...hmm...sound is looping....everything has locked up...ctrl+alt+del...Hey! You can see my cursor that belongs to windows, but not this program. *waits for a couple minutes* There we go, task manager. End task! Wait a few more minutes...Yay! I can continue with life!". This lock-up is annoying, because you either get looping sounds or no sound at all. You ctrl+alt+del but it takes a while, but nonetheless you are triumphant over the unresponding program! Even though it may take more time and effort.

Now...this is what I call the "Lethal Lock-Up". As we all know, turning off our pc, without shutting it down properly, can be potentially harmful to our precious hard drive...or even worse...it can be lethal. Now, what makes the "lethal lock-up" lethal? Well...I came across this lock-up grimling while playing First Strike. What it does is this...completely locks-up with or without looping sounds. You can do anything, and I mean NOTHING AT ALL! Ctrl+alt+del is futile! Alt+Tab is futile! Alt+F4 is pitiful! Ctrl+Esc is dismissable! The only thing you can do...is go with your final resort...shutting off your pc abruplty without proper shut down.

Every time you do this, it increases your chances of a hard drive failure...I have learned from my mistakes a coupe years back. Now why do I bring this up? Its because there is a 35% chance (Thats just a shot in the dark, but an educated guess though) of your pc experiencing a "Lethal Lock-Up" while playing First Strike.

This happens pretty much randomly in game; on loading screen, when you click deploy, when you spawn, or even out of no where when you think everything is fine and dandy! The thing is...this bug or glitch could be potentially deadly to our pcs. I hate turning off my pc like that, and I wish to not do it.

Is this a bug, glitch, or engine error? But, all-in-all, it needs to be fixed.

Can you fix this?

Thank you for reading my pillar of text smile

Why so serious?

Re: Major problem! Potentially lethal to your hard drive!

I never actually had a lethal-lockup during FS. But on BF2 mods, I once got this lockup when it just jammed there for couple of seconds, nothing looped, no keyboard/mouse responding and everything just froze over. Then the computer just started to reboot itself automatically. Its been some time ago when that happened but I havent had anything as serious appearing lately, not with FS, not with other mods, not with other games nor any sorts of programs.

Re: Major problem! Potentially lethal to your hard drive!

I use to get this kind of lock up all the time.  I took out the X-Fi sound card and the "lethal lock up's" have stopped.  It's a catch 22 though, as the built in sound card on my current Asus mobo sucks and I can hear everything, everywhere on all maps.  I can hear a guy reload from 1000 meters away!  WTF?   Hope my new boards FXII card is better cause otherwise the sounds in all BF2/2142/mods, suck.

Re: Major problem! Potentially lethal to your hard drive!

I haven't done a Proper shut down of my Computer for years... and when I do i swear it makes things worst.  But Mine seems to work fine my Hard drive is like 8 years old smile  But my comp is newer.

I will get random Crashes to desktop sometimes from this, Sometimes i get just a laggy lock up.. usually when i try to maximize after i minimize,  rarely get the sound lockup and i haven't got the blue screen lock up for awhile.

Re: Major problem! Potentially lethal to your hard drive!

I have gotten the "lethal lock-up" about four times now, maybe one or two more.
It seems random to me.  Had it happen on space maps, and ground maps.

Although, About a week ago I changed sound options from hardware to software(advice from people on this very site).  And I haven't had a lock up since then.
Maybe it has to do with sound cards/SC drivers.

Try switching to software for audio TC and see if you still get the lethal lock-up.
