Oh, and to elaborate on ion cannons in FS, they do two things: They make it harder for capital ships to fire on you, and they make it harder for fighters to evade you. A tactic I love to employ with the TIE Bomber, if I actually get behind an enemy fighter, is to cripple it with the ion cannon and then blast it with lasers while it can't evade.
