Using a joystick in BF2/2142 is like driving to the grocery store in a Porsche....complete overkill for such a simple and arcadey game.

I use (and always have used) a mouse for helo's/aircraft, and my KDR is fine. On the other hand, I bought a Saitek X-52 , put about 12 hours into configing and playing with it, and its now gathering dust. Great for hardcore sims like Lock-On: Modern Air Combat, useless for FPS'es.

I echo exactly what Immunity said.  Same joystick (BTW the X-52 is a killer set up) and it's great for true flight sims, but keyboard and mouse rule the day in FPS's (no matter the vehicle).

Space battles are incredibly fun.

Can't wait for combined arms maps.

In Battlefront 2, the space maps were a big hit to start, but they wore thin rather quickly.  These ones are implemented better with more features and generally better gameplay; however, they are much slower paced.  I think they did an excellent job with space but ultimately they will wear thin as the novelty will wear off.  The folks playing this are primarily tactical FPS folks so I suspect, like in SWBF2, the space maps will be short lived.

Note:  Some folks still love the SWBF2 space maps and the CTF mode was extremely fun...but IN GENERAL, they were massively less popular than the infantry conquest.

So, I'd agree - more infantry conquest over space; however, perhaps buff space by adding in modes using the same maps (CTF is fun...trust me on that ;-))

I have to comment on this.

The reason Battlefront 2 Space fights sucked so bad is because it wasn't a sim.  They had preprogrammed moves in it.  It was crap.  Hit a button and do an immelman.  Hit another button and do another move.  That is NOT flying.

The thing about the space fights in this game is because it is very Sim like.  You're success is directly linked to how well you can a) track everyone around you (called situational awareness), b) think in a 3d environment, and c) fly to your ships strengths, and d) recognize just what your opponent is doing before they do.

Re: More infantry, less space battles.

I am having fun on both space and ground maps, although I prefer ground fighting as of now. I think thats just personal preference though as I am quite the lousy pilot, but I am learning. As has been mentioned before I would like to see additions to space fighters like the use of shields etc. ... would just be more involved and fun.

I love the idea of mixed mode maps, however they are conceived ... also would just LOVE to see a Hoth ground map.

This mod is so much more fun than 2142, so whatever comes down the pike I am sure I will enjoy.

Re: More infantry, less space battles.

I've been flying with a keyboard and mouse since Battlefield 1942 and have been a decent pilot all the way along.

Something to keep in mind is that ground maps take a considerable toll on the art/content creation departments.  I am glad Release 1 had a couple space and ground maps instead of 1 space map and a couple more half-assed ground maps.

In future releases, mappers will have a larger pool of coded vehicles to draw from when creating maps (ATATs, tanks, more ground structures, etc).  Because of that, you will definitely see the inclusion of more combined arms ground maps.

I know that we are aiming for combined arms maps in the future, because this is the hallmark of the battlefield series to begin with.  Taking it back to BF1942, the appeal of that game was that you could jump into a plane, tank, or take to the battlefield on foot and have a unique and different experience each time.

As far as the two space maps we have now, I'd say the gameplay experience is what you make it.  If you jump in the same fighter each time, fly towards the same target in a straight line and keep getting shot down, I have no sympathy for you.  The trick is to work together with other players, play smart, use capital ships for cover, etc.  If you're used to being a lone wolf on infantry maps, don't be suprised if your X-Wing keeps getting shot up.
